My research is focused on interactions among land management, water resources and human wellbeing. For my postdoctoral work with GLI, I am looking for patterns in agricultural water use to identify regions where changing irrigation management could increase or stabilize food supply while ensuring the delivery of a suite of complementary ecosystem services. I am also working with the Natural Capital Project to improve and apply water quality models, which will help quantify the value of different land use types and management practices on water quality.
My graduate research at Stanford University provides insight and guidance for ecosystem services assessments and policy. In the Emmett Interdisciplinary Program in Environment and Resources, I worked with a committee from ecology, hydrology, economics, and law to develop theory and field evidence of hydrologic ecosystem services. Integrating a large body of existing hydrology research about land-use effects on water into the ecosystem services framework culminated in an article coauthored with Gretchen Daily, T Ka’eo Duarte, and Harold Mooney for the 2007 Annual Review of Environment and Resources, “The Nature and Value of Ecosystem Services: A focus on hydrology.” I also lead a field project measuring the biophysical and economic impacts of conversion between forest and pasture on Hawai’i Island. I produced a video about this study for an Ecological Society of America conference on ecosystem services.
Prior to graduate school, I worked in Public Education at the Natural Resources Defense Council, providing information to and interpreting scientific findings for members.
